New York Post Interview

October 12, 2007

Lilian Garcia wants to live and sing

Ring announcer Michael Buffer better watch out for this hot Latina. WWE ring announcer Lilian Garcia of Monday Night Raw has more to offer then her good looks and MC skills, this Latina has a set of pipes on her and showed them on Monday Night Raw this past Monday, which by the way was the first all Latino musical performance ever for WWE.

Garcia who is in town today signing autographs for the release of her debut album “¡Quiero Vivir!” (I Want to Live!), stopped by the New York Post office today before heading to FYE in the Bronx for her album signing.

Garcia a full blooded Puerto Rican living in midtown Manhattan grew up in Madrid, Spain for the first 8 years of her life before moving to Columbia, South Carolina. Garcia calls herself “La Esponola Boricua” (the Puerto Rican Spaniard) but the switch from Madrid to Columbia was more then a culture shock for the songstress.

“It was very traumatic because Madrid was like NYC with the big city life and then going to South Carolina which is a great place to raise children and I love South Carolina but it was a huge change,” says Garcia. “There was no Latino experience in South Carolina I was kind of an outsider and picked on for being the girl going too dressed up to school because in Madrid we do not wear jeans and my mom didn’t believe in wearing jeans so I always wore dresses.”

The one place where Garcia was able to find her acceptance was on stage singing. “Even though I always got picked on, whenever I sang at a show of any kind at school you can always hear a pin drop and I will always remember that because it was my one moment that no one was picking on me and I could bond with everyone, which is why singing has always been so special to me.”

Garcia who use to sing every Friday and Saturday at Olé Restaurant on 25th St. and 2nd Avenue in NYC first got her vocal talent noticed by WWE owner Vince McMahon in February of 2000 when she sang the national anthem and floored the wrestling entertainment owner. “When he heard me sing he was like ‘Wow! You have to do this at every single show,’ and I did it a every show for 8 years.” Then the seed was planted for WWE to produce an all Latin CD when Garcia sang the Puerto Rican national anthem in Puerto Rico back in 2005. “Vince McMahon was like ‘Oh my God! This is what I want to do.” He loved the way I sang in Spanish and said he wants to do a Spanish CD. Which was great for me because I love singing in Spanish, I think it is so poetic.”

For Garcia’s debut CD she didn’t hold anything back and went all out with music producers George Noriega (Ricky Martin, Jon Secada, and Gloria Estefan) and Tim Mitchell (Shakira) with special guest Jon Secada who co-wrote and sings two songs with Garcia. “It was an amazing experience working with George and Tim and when they told me that Jon Secada wanted to be apart of it I was like ‘Great!” Garcia continues, “I was like, ‘Wow!’ I’m in the room with George Noriega, Tim Mitchell and Jon Secada and they are taking my ideas. It was surreal and it was only the second day that I worked with them.”

It looks like there is nothing this cum laude graduate of the University of South Carolina can’t do. Garcia is a singer, song writer, ring announcer, former radio host and the list goes on for his self-described Latin pop rocker. She has it all and then some.
